- Per decenni il pubblico di tutto il mondo lo ha acclamato come il ''re'' della musica soul. Con James Brown, il cantante nero statunitense morto oggi in un ospedale di Atlanta all'eta' di 73 anni, scompare una figura leggendaria del mondo dello spettacolo. Ha saputo trasformare il gospel in ''rhythm e blues'' e creare un genere soul del tutto originale, il funk, con i suoi ritmi incalzanti. Era stato ricoverato ieri sera per una polmonite acuta.

Brown, che si era autodefinito "il padrino del soul", ha fatto scuola anche sul palcoscenico, con la sua fisicita' dirompente, che ha influenzato successivamente cantanti del calibro di Mick Jagger e Iggy Pop.

Alle spalle ha avuto un'infanzia difficile: nato da una famiglia poverissima della Carolina del Sud nel 1933, a sei anni viveva in un bordello ad Augusta, Georgia, e per pagarsi l'affitto lavorava come lustrascarpe e nelle piantagioni di cotone. A otto anni provava a rubare la sua prima macchina e finiva in un riformatorio. E' qui che avviene la sua svolta perche' conosce Bobby Byrd ed entra nel suo gruppo di gospel, prima di fondare , nel 1952, la propria band ''The Flames''.

Nel 1956 scrive "Please, Please, Please", ed e' il successo mondiale, consacrato nel 1961 con la registrazione dal vivo, nel tempio della musica nera dell'Apollo Theatre ad Harlem, di un album diventato un vero e proprio culto, con canzoni come ''I got you (I feel good) '' e ''Get up (I feel like being a sex machine)''.

Capace di suonare 350 serate all'anno, James Brown si trasforma, con la ricchezza, in un esempio di ''capitalismo nero'' , ben prima che il termine fosse inventato; apre ristoranti e negozi ed esorta i suoi concittadini di colore a vivere il ''sogno americano''.

Il giorno dell'assassinio di Martin Luther King, tiene un concerto teletrasmesso, invitando la popolazione alla calma. Il presidente Lyndon Johnson lo ringraziera' per questo. Negli anni ottanta diviene anche un volto cinematografico, interpretando il ruolo del predicatore nei 'Blues Brothers'' e cantando una delle sue canzoni piu' note "Living in America" nel film Rocky IV.
